Winning the ‘People Also Ask’ box

Winning the 'People Also Ask' box — AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) | Answer Layer

To win Google’s People Also Ask box, turn each real user question into an H2 and answer it in 40 to 60 words right below, in a direct, liftable block. Google picks short answers from pages that already rank reasonably well. The upside: the same answer can appear in the PAA boxes of dozens of different queries.

The People Also Ask box shows up in roughly half of all Google searches, according to Semrush Sensor data. It is one of the few SERP features where a page outside the top 3 can earn above-the-fold visibility. This guide shows how to claim those spots, step by step.

What is the People Also Ask box?

It is the block of expandable questions Google inserts into the results, usually between positions 2 and 4. Each question opens a mini snippet: a short answer lifted from a page, with a link to the source. Click a question and Google loads two to four related ones, in a near-infinite cascade.

Unlike the featured snippet, which has a single winner per query, the PAA box spreads its spots across several pages. And the same question-answer pair resurfaces across different queries: one good PAA spot multiplies on its own.

How do you find the right PAA questions?

Start with the SERP itself: search your keyword and log the questions Google already shows, including the ones that appear as you expand. Then validate with tools like Semrush or AlsoAsked, which map the chains of related questions. The goal is to build the complete question cluster around your topic, not to chase one isolated question.

Prioritize questions that already trigger the PAA box on your main query and that your content does not answer yet. That is the fastest win: the content already ranks, the question is already validated, all that is missing is the answer in the right format.

What answer format wins a PAA spot?

The winning format follows three rules:

  • The question is the heading. Use the users’ real phrasing in an H2 or H3, not a “creative” version of it.
  • The answer comes immediately after, in 40 to 60 words. Two to three self-contained sentences that make sense read outside the page.
  • Match the format to the question. Running text for definitions, an ordered list for processes, a plain list for enumerations. Tables do not always render well inside the box, so prefer lists when you can.

After the answer block, expand as much as you like. Google only needs to be able to isolate the first sentences.

What is the difference between PAA and a featured snippet?

The featured snippet is the single box at the top, “position zero”; PAA is a block of several questions, each with its own source. The snippet requires a top 10 ranking for the query; PAA accepts sources with more modest rankings, as long as the answer is the most direct one. And while a snippet is won or lost whole, in PAA you can hold several spots at once, on the same SERP and on neighboring ones. The good news: the answer format that wins one is exactly the format that wins the other.

Is PAA still worth it in the age of AI Overviews?

Yes, for two reasons. First, the PAA box still appears in about half of all SERPs and drives qualified clicks: sites optimized for PAA have reported average click-through gains of 21%. Second, the work is the same work that feeds AI answers. According to GoodFirms, 97% of AI Overview citations come from pages in the top 20, and each Overview cites 8 to 13 sources on average. Questions answered in short, liftable blocks are precisely what those systems extract. PAA is also an intent radar: the questions it surfaces are the same ones users ask ChatGPT and Perplexity.

How do you track the PAA spots you win?

Use a rank tracker that records SERP features (Semrush, SE Ranking, AWR) and turn on the People Also Ask filter. Watch three numbers: how many queries in your keyword universe show the box, how many of those cite you as the source of at least one answer, and which questions competitors own that you do not. Revisit the report monthly: the questions in the box rotate often, and every new question is a content opportunity.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a top 10 ranking to appear in PAA?

It helps, but it is not mandatory the way it is for featured snippets. Google picks PAA answers from pages with more modest rankings when the answer is the most direct and best formatted for that specific question.

Should I use FAQ schema to win PAA spots?

FAQ schema no longer produces rich results for most sites, but it still helps machines understand the question-answer structure. The deciding factor for PAA is the visible format: question in the heading, short answer right below.

How many questions should I answer per article?

Cover the full cluster for the topic: typically 5 to 10 related questions, each with its own heading and answer block. Every well-answered question is an independent ticket into the PAA boxes of different queries.

Next step: go deeper into the AEO pillar to master optimizing for answer engines, and learn how to win featured snippets, the PAA box’s older sibling.
